Silly Season: Time for the BookLovers Convention

Yep, it's spring, so yep, it's time for the start of the silly season: the gi-normous Romantic Times BOOKlovers Convention, this year held in Columbus, OH. We're talking two or more thousand readers, writers, booksellers, librarians and other industry professionals, plus four hundred or more (I lose count at these things) published authors. Oh, and a handful of male cover models.

Do you now see why it's the silly season?

It's great fun, a super time for readers and authors to meet, a super time for authors to connect with other authors, a super time for librarians and booksellers...and I think the male cover models endure the best they can.

Here's my schedule for those so inclined:

PRE-CON Aspiring and Advanced Writer Workshops

Monday 4/26
10:15-12:00: FINDING MR. GOODWRITE: Linnea Sinclair and Stacey Kade
1:30-2:45: POINT of VIEW: Linnea Sinclair & Stacey Kade

Tuesday 4/27
TUES 10 – 11AM: STAYING INSPIRED - : Linnea Sinclair & Stacey Kade
3:00-3:45: ASK US ANYTHING/Smith/Parmley/Sinclair/Groe/Lee/Kade

Yeah, Stacey and I do the dog & pony together a lot. We write from different philosophies but we end up at the same place. We're also crit partners, so it's fun for students to see how authors who don't agree on the philosophies of the craft still work together.

What Authors Do Besides Write

Yes, I've been absent the past two Mondays. I can't even blame it on my deadline (which still looms menacingly). I was at RT which is author shorthand for the most fun you can have with your clothes on. RT is the annual Romantic Times BOOKlovers Convention, this year in Orlando, FL. About 250 authors and 1000 readers, editors, agents, librarians and booksellers get together to make merry and swap stories for a week.

Male cover models also make an appearance. Cover art is a large part of the book industry so it's no surprise that guys compete for these coveted modeling jobs. Some, like Fabio or John D'Salvo make careers of it. Most use it as a springboard for acting jobs in soaps, ads or movies.

However at this RT, decidely one of the most popular of the boys was a real boy: nine month old Jack Browne, courtesy of his mommy, author Isabo Kelly. Jack participated in last year's RT in Pittsburg, via, um, the womb. Isabo was the "pregnant Ninja lady" at the Intergalactic Bar & Grille Party. But this year Jack was a shining star all his own.

So here's to a future Mr. Romance and starship captain!
And of course, the rest of the convention went something like this:

(Below) Authors Cindy Holby (Colby Hodge) and Stacey Kade

Celebrate Romance, Celebrating Wins!

A mish-mash of a blog today. No writing tips. Lots of BSP (blatant self promotion). If you wonder where Colby Hodge disappeared to, she was at Celebrate Romance, a small but wonderful author/reader conference, as was I. And about 70 others. This year it was in Columbia SC (you can probably figure my mindset when my flight landed in Charlotte and the pilot annouced it was 37-degrees out. I'm from Florida...). It was at the Inn at USC, a totally lovely historic hotel on the edge of the USC campus.

Author Isabo Kelly (solo below) and I, along with reader Robin Greene, arrived by limo from the airport:
Hey, life's short. Eat dessert first and take a limo when you can.

And here's Colby Hodge (R-standing) with author Elizabeth Hoyt (seated) at the CR signing at Books A Million Saturday night:

More photos can be found here at the moment, on the Publisher's Weekly blog. I'll post them all by week's end on my site in News.
